Yew Tree Primary School

Science

Subject Co-ordinator: Miss Harris

At Yew Tree we deliver high-quality science education which provides the foundations for understanding the world through the specific disciplines of biology, chemistry and physics.
We ensure that all pupils:
  • develop scientific knowledge and conceptual understanding through the specific disciplines
  • develop understanding of the nature, processes and methods of science through different types of science enquiries that help them to answer scientific questions about the world around them
  • are equipped with the scientific knowledge required to understand the uses and implications of science, today and for the future

We Year 3 they have completed a scientific investigation to see if they could change the size of a shadow using the equipment provided. The children worked scientifically to plan and carry out an investigation and they recorded the results and their conclusion.

Scientific investigations and working scientifically are features of our Science units. Also, the children use mathematical skills to help present their findings.

In Year 1 they have been working scientifically performing experiments to observe the effects of static electricity. This links to their current text 'Matilda' by Roald Dahl and how the character made object rise.

Our pupils have the opportunity to carry out practical investigations in science that help them to develop their scientific skills - these skills are known as working scientifically skills

Below are the 7 working scientifically skills we use when carrying out investigations.

Knowledge Organisers

In our Science curriculum we use knowledge organisers. These are used at the start of each new unit of work to introduce new concepts and vocabulary. At the start of the unit children recap on prior learning and how this fits in with their new learning.  Children have a copy in their books and a copy is sent home (via Class Dojo messages) for the children to share with their parents and discuss. We encourage all children to refer back to these throughout the unit as they help children to to become rich in knowledge.

Please click the year group topic below to view the knowledge organisers for this half term.

Nursery - In the garden

Reception - Creep, crawl and wriggle / African Safari

Year 1 and Year 2 - On Safari

Year 3 and Year 4 - Forces and Magnets

Year 5 and Year 6 - Electricity

If you require an additional copy of your child's knowledge organiser, please speak to your child's class teacher.
