Reading at home
Depending on what stage your child is on, they will either get a daily Ditty sheet, or get a reading book that is changed every 3 days or every 5 days. Their book will contain similar sounds and vocabulary to the book they have been reading in their Phonics lessons that week. This should help your child feel confident and enjoy reading rather than finding it a struggle.
Below you can find info about daily activities to do each day at home.
If your child is in the Ditty phonics group, they will bring home a new ditty sheet every day. This is a small passage of text to read that contains only the sounds they have been taught in school. Your child should therefore be able to decode each word independently and feel confident about their reading skills.
Please ask your child to read their ditty to you every day after school, then they will soon be ready to take home a book!
If your child brings home a red reading book, they will follow a 3-day plan:
If your child brings home a green, purple, pink, orange, yellow, blue or grey book, they will follow a 5-day plan:
If your child brings home a chapter book, or tells you they are a 'Reading Explorer', this means they can choose any book they like. They can keep this for as long as it takes to read it, as they are now reading for pleasure! They just need to tell their teacher when they are ready to change it.
Don't forget, if your child gets stuck on a word, ask them to 'look for special friends' (2 or more letters that make one sound e.g. ch / ay / igh) and then 'Fred Talk' to read the word. Fred is the school frog who can only speak in sounds, like this: h-e-ll-o! The children copy Fred, and then blend the sounds together to say the word.
You can ask your child to do 'Fred in your head' if they are sounding out every word. This should help them to sound more fluent.
READING CHALLENGE!
Please enjoy reading these books at home. You can read the book on your own, with an adult or you can listen to the book being read to you.
When you have read the book, please return it to school and make sure you let your teacher know so they can tick it off your list.
If you already have any of the books at home or want to visit the local library, you can let your teacher know to tick them off the list too!
There are mystery prizes for some of the children who complete the reading challenge and read all 10 books!
