Yew Tree Primary School

Handwriting

Subject Co-ordinator: Miss Nolan

Across school we have frequent handwriting lessons to teach our handwriting style, how to form letters correctly and how to join letters together. Handwriting is celebrated throughout school on displays and within lessons to encourage children to take pride in their presentation.

Handwriting takes place using guidelines to support the children in forming their letters the correct size. The children are familiar with the names of these lines (top broken line, top solid line, bottom solid line and bottom broken line). Most letters sit within the solid lines, with the exception of ascenders (e.g. h, l, b), descenders (e.g. y, g, j) and capitals.

The children's books in all subjects (except Maths) have the guidelines in for consistency in handwriting.

Below you will find the programme guide 'Achieving Excellence in Handwriting' and a printable copy of the guidelines so that you can help and encourage your child to practice at home.
