Yew Tree Primary School

History

Subject Co-Ordinator: Mrs Tickle

At Yew Tree Primary school we provide a rich history curriculum to ignite children’s curiosity to find out about how Britain has influenced and been influenced by the wider world. We give children the opportunity to work as historians and critically analyse different sources of information. We equip children the skills to ask perceptive questions, think critically, weigh evidence, sift arguments and develop perspective and judgement. Not only do we want our children to gain knowledge and skills within the classroom, we also want them to have experiences outside the classroom through educational visits.

Topic displays around school show the key concepts in our projects and the key vocabulary that children will use during the current project.

Our topic displays support children in their learning and act as a useful point of reference.

In our History curriculum we have introduced knowledge organisers. These are used at the start of each new unit of work to introduce new concepts and vocabulary. Children have a copy in their books and a copy is sent home for the children to use. We encourage all children to use these regularly as they help children to to become rich in knowledge.

As we have a split class in Key Stage 1, History projects are completed in a two year cycle (Year A and Year B). The current academic year 2023/2024 is Year B . This ensure that all National Curriculum objectives are covered and completed by all children.

Knowledge Organisers

In our curriculum we use knowledge organisers. These are used at the start of each new unit of work to introduce new concepts and vocabulary. At the start of the unit children recap on prior learning and how this fits in with their new learning.  All children have a copy in their books and a copy is sent home for the children to share with their parents and discuss. We encourage all children to refer back to these throughout the unit as they help children to to become rich in knowledge.
