Modern Foreign Languages

At Yew Tree, we use a variety of teaching and learning styles in our MFL lessons. Our principal aim is to develop children knowledge, skills and understanding of our target language, Spanish. Children will have the opportunity to support their work with a variety of resources. We aim for a balance of whole class, group and independent learning. Wherever possible we encourage children to use and apply their learning in other areas of the curriculum; ICT, PE and Music, for example, are particularly appropriate for cross-curricular teaching.

Our chosen language for KS2 is Spanish based on popularity of choice at KS3 in local high schools, staff knowledge and phonic accessibility of Spanish. The school will follow the 'Language Angels' scheme of work which will be taught progressively through years 3-6 with activities building on previous learning and ensuring progression.

By the end of KS2, children will be able to;

  • Listen attentively to spoken language and show understanding by joining in and responding
  • Explore the patterns and sounds of language through songs and rhymes and link the spelling, sound and meaning of words.
  • Engage in conversations; ask and answer questions; express opinion and respond to those of others; seek clarification and help
  • Speak in sentences using familiar vocabulary , phrases and basic language structures
  • Develop accurate pronunciation and intonation so that others understand when they are reading aloud or using familiar words and phrases
  • Present ideas and information orally to a range of audience
  • Read carefully and show understanding of words, phrases and simple writing
  • Appreciate stories, song, poems and rhymes in the language
  • Broaden their vocabulary and develop their ability to understand new words that are introduced into familiar written material, including through using a dictionary.
  • Write phrases from memory, and adapt these to create new sentence to express ideas clearly
  • Describe people , places , things and actions both orally and in writing
  • Understand the culture, customs and values of other countries to allow children to become global citizens.

Modern languages are not taught in KS1 but will be introduced into the routine throughout the day, for example during the register, classroom instruction and counting.
